Getting Started

Using Taxonomies

Creating a taxonomy is very much like creating a nested folder structure:

  1. Open the Taxonomy Manager in one of the following ways:

    • In the main sidebar, that is at the bottom of the Content Manager.

    • By selecting Floating content panel in the context menu next to the Taxonomies root level.

  2. Select Create taxonomy in the context menu next to the root tag. Enter the taxonomy name and confirm by clicking the tick. The topmost tag will be the name of the taxonomy, for instance "Product models".

  3. Color the taxonomies. This makes it easier to keep track of the different kinds of categories you create: in the context menu (next to the taxonomy to be colored), just click the color that you want to add to the taxonomy label.

  4. Then create subordinate tags under this first tag, perhaps starting in this case with the name of a brand, like ACME.

  5. Add more tags under this tag to create "child" tags for the different product models in this case, such as "X1000", "X2000", etc. These should all be added from the same tag, so they become "siblings":

  6. Create any taxonomy you like the same way, for instance if you want to have one for subject matter, such as "Introduction", "Installation", "Maintenance", etc.

  7. Once you have your taxonomies, you can start using them to tag content: Just drag and drop tags from the taxonomies that you have created to the component you want to tag. The action is confirmed with a pop-up message: Link was successfully created!

You can select multiple taxonomies at once and drag to a component, to tag it with multiple tags at once. You can also do the other way around, i.e select multiple components and drag them to a taxonomy tag.

You can get your taxonomy values output as class values in HTML5 output. You can enable this in the Layout Settings for HTML5 for a layout you've created.
